When the vibrations produced by a press, generator, turbine or compressor are not damped correctly, they damage both the machine itself and the surrounding structural elements. In the condition known as resonance, if the machine's operating frequency approaches the natural frequency of the foundation, the vibration amplitudes can reach dangerous levels. For this reason, machine foundation design — unlike a conventional building foundation — requires dynamic analysis.

- Dynamic loads: The machine's speed, unbalanced masses and operating frequency are taken into account.
- Soil-foundation interaction: The dynamic stiffness and damping properties of the soil are modelled.
- Mass ratio: In block foundations, keeping the foundation mass a certain multiple of the machine mass limits vibration.
- Vibration isolation: Where necessary, the machine is isolated from the structure with springs, elastomer pads or isolators.

Massive block foundations are used for heavy, low-speed machines, while frame foundations that raise the machine off the ground are used for high-speed turbines and generators. Choosing the right foundation type directly affects both the initial investment cost and the long-term maintenance expenses.
